This style of chew is cut from the beam of a Red Stag antler that is split in quarters. Red Stag have a larger sized antler than most deer, which allows it to be split to expose the interior marrow. This chew allows your dog to have easy access to the center, which is good for light chewing dogs, or dogs that are new to antlers.
About the Deer
Originally from Europe, Red Deer (distant cousins of the North American Elk) are now inhabitants of 6 continents, and widely known as a popular game species. Back during the days of the Roman Empire, Red Deer were used to pull wagons and cars in the festivals honoring Diana, the goddess of hunting. Every year, Red Deer males (more commonly known as Red Stags) grow antler for protection from predators, as well as establishing dominance with other males during breeding season. At the end of winter, when breeding season is over, the males naturally shed their antlers to get ready to grow new ones for next year.
Sheds are like fingerprints. They all have the same general shape, but the details are very different. Although the picture shows a general idea, the color and shape will vary.
Dogs should be supervised while they are chewing their antler. When it gets worn down small enough to swallow, we advise that you throw it away.
