This style of chew is cut from the beam of an Elk antler that is split in quarters. Elk have a larger sized antler than most deer, which allows it to be split to expose the interior marrow. This chew allows your dog to have easy access to the center, which is good for light chewing dogs, or dogs that are new to antlers.
About the Deer
Elk are the second largest deer native to North America, and are a very popular game to hunt in the Rocky Mountains, stretching from New Mexico, to Montana. Another popular name for Elk is "Wapiti", given to them by the Shawnee natives. Wapiti means white rump, which refers to their light color patch on the Elk's behind. Each year in the spring, they shed their enormous antlers (sometimes weighing upward of 30 lbs) and begin to grow again. In the fall, they use their antlers to attract mates, protect from predators, and intimidate other males. There are many subspecies of Elk throughout the world in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Sheds are like fingerprints. They all have the same general shape, but the details are very different. Although the picture shows a general idea, the color and shape will vary.
Dogs should be supervised while they are chewing their antler. When it gets worn down small enough to swallow, we advise that you throw it away.
