This style of chew is cut from the beam of an Axis antler. The beam is the middle part of the antler that is in between the base and the tine. Axis is the most dense antler that we sell because it contains no marrow in the center. Since the antler is so dense, it will last your dog for months! If your dog loves to chew, and can chew through anything, we recommend that you give this antler a try.
About the Deer
Originally native to southern Asia, Axis now run wild in multiple areas of the United States. They are the most abundant free range exotic deer both in Hawaii and Texas, where they were introduced in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Hawaii, Axis were first given as a gift to King Kamehameha V from China and soon populated the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Maui. Axis deer is best known for the challenging hunt, and the delicacy that comes from a successful harvest. The males have 2 long, 3 pointed antlers used for fighting and protection, but are most recognizable from their dark red coat with white spots, very much similar to a Whitetail Deer fawn.
Sheds are like fingerprints. They all have the same general shape, but the details are very different. Although the picture shows a general idea, the color and shape will vary.
Dogs should be supervised while they are chewing their antler. When it gets worn down small enough to swallow, we advise that you throw it away.
